The new drives are versions of Baldor’s e100 single- and three-phase drives. Up to now, these drives have been compatible with the real-time Powerlink Ethernet standard, TCP/IP and Baldor’s Mint system building environment. With this release, Baldor upgrades the capability of the drives to additionally be configured for EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP networks. These two communications protocols greatly extend the applications potential of the drives in PLC-controlled applications.
Baldor’s MicroFlex e100 and MotiFlex drives have earned a reputation for being extremely easy to configure and use – through features such as wizard application software which removes the traditional complexity of drive set up.
The drives also offer many novel hardware capabilities that PLC users can benefit from. The three-phase drives are energy efficient, offering a DC bus system that can share regenerated power with other axes. As well as their own local I/O and CANopen expansion, many drives also have option card slots, providing a high degree of configurability for specific applications including almost all fieldbuses. Other features include universal encoder feedback input, and programmable notch filters to eliminate mechanical resonance effects, as well as the ability to be used with servomotors, closed loop vector motors or in V/Hz motor speed control modes.
“Our new drives support multiple standards – out-of-the-box – at no extra cost and without any need for plug-in cards,” says Baldor’s product manager David Greensmith. “They provide system builders with a universal drive platform that can be used in many different ways to suit different customers and applications – from standalone motion control systems to networked systems hosted by PLCs or other devices.”
In addition to the new drive functionality, Baldor now supports all of the Ethernet networks on its NextMove e100 motion system and machine controller. This combines network control capability with control facilities for up to seven analog or stepper drives, and may be used standalone or in conjunction with PLC or PC hosts.

Baldor LMDS – Dual Axis Linear Stepper Motor
The open-loop linear stepper motor provides the most economical linear motor positioning package. The compact dual-axis stepper motor provides travel along two axes in a single plane. The dual axis package is comprised of two components: a moving forcer (with bearings) and a stationary platen. A position verification system is available to close the loop.
The dual-axis linear stepper motor is designed for two-axis open loop positioning. It is a two axis stage with integrated air bearings and positioning system and offer very high levels of positioning performance. They are capable of move speeds of up to 1.5 metres/second at resolutions to 2.5 microns and with a repeatability of better than 2 microns. They also offer friction-free mechanics with zero-backlash and no wind-up — for a major performance improvement over traditional mechanical transmission design technologies, as well as maintenance savings. The bases are available in a choice of seven standard sizes with square or rectangular working areas ranging from 375 x 375 to 750 x 1500 mm.
The moving primary 2 or 4-phase dual-axis linear stepper motor consists of a moving forcer and a stationary platen. The forcer is made of four single-axis coil assemblies. Two of the forcer assemblies are mounted in series to provide a thrust in the X direction and the other two are mounted orthogonal (at 90 deg.) to the first two assemblies to provide thrust in the Y direction. The forcer assemblies are encapsulated in a hard anodized aluminum housing. The motor’s surface is lapped to provide a flat surface for the air bearing. The floating height of the air bearing is less than 25 µm [0.001 in]. The forcer is available in eight sizes, depending on the application’s
force requirements.
The platen is a photo-chemically etched steel plate that is filled with epoxy and ground. Standard mounting holes are provided on forcer and platen. The platen is available in sizes up to 0.24m x 0.34m [36 in x 59 in]. Preload for the bearing system is provided by the magnetic-attractive force between the forcer and the platen. The customer must bring power to the forcer with a cable, and provide the bearing air supply.
Features:
- Two-axis motion in a single plane
- Acceleration to 19.6 m/s2 [2g]
- High repeatability 5.08 µm [0.0002 in]
- Flatness = 12.7 µm/300 m [0.0005 in/ft.]
