- Running of stored sequences while passing data into the sequences as needed from a computer, PLC or other master controller. With this method, any settable parameter or variable values entered/changed via direct entry from a computer, PLC or other master controller will be utilized when a stored sequence is run.
RS-485 Communications:
By incorporating this robust and cost effective communication method, the CRK Series with built in controller can easily be used with existing PLC or PC master controls in a network or as a stand alone unit without the need for expensive cables or proprietary networks.

- Ability to multidrop up to 16 units.
*Note: The termination resistor switch on the last unit in line needs to be turned to the on position to ensure proper communication. - Accepts PLC or PC based programming (ASCII commands), no need for dedicated software.

PK Series 2-Phase Stepping Motor – Expanded Lineup Now offers High Torque – High Efficiency Type
Oriental Motor USA is pleased to announce the PKE High Torque – High Efficiency type stepping motor, an industry leading new motor designed to provide maximum torque while creating efficiencies currently not available in the stepper motor market. The PKE motors produce the same amount of torque as our high torque PK-P type stepping motors while greatly reducing the heat generated, allowing for 100% duty cycle operation. On top of these significant benefits, it is aggressively priced to be the same as our PK-P motors.
How does the PKE achieve such a dominate position? The R&D engineers at Oriental Motor utilized new technology in the form of new materials, advanced stator and rotor design and new construction methods to achieve performance unlike any other stepping motor in the market. These advantages are also supported by a short lead-time, two types of winding options along with two driver options, if desired, for optimum guaranteed performance. In summary, the PKE 2 phase stepping motors provide more torque, saves energy and generate less heat than any conventional stepping motor on the market today with a competitive price. The time is now to introduce and demonstrate the advantages only Oriental Motor can offer.
New Line up:
- 42mm (1.65 in.)
- 3 motor stack lengths (PKE243, PKE244, PKE245)
*Dimensions are same as PK-P 42mm series - Bipolar (4 lead wire) or Unipolar (6 lead wire)
* Note: L – at the end of the part number, includes lead wire connector assembly of 2 ft. (0.6m).
Benefit of new motors:
- More Torque – 1.2 to 1.5 times more torque at rated current than a conventional 2 phase stepping motor. This allows for space savings
Oriental Motor USA Corporation – Confidential 2 through downsizing of the motor or taking advantage of more torque in the same size motor.
- Saves Energy – by requiring up to 40% less power to be consumed at rated current, these high efficiency motors require less power to produce the rated torque thus allowing for smaller power supplies.
- Lower input power to get equivalent output torque → Lower driver power consumption
- Lower input power to get equivalent output torque → Smaller Power Supply
- Lower motor losses → Lower motor heat generation
- Generates less heat – up to 78% (measured in °C) lower temperature rise when compared to a conventional stepping motor, when producing the same torque level. Running at rated current with 1.2 ~ 1.5 more torque, the PKE motor runs up to 50% cooler. This increases the service life of the motor, reduces the need for additional cooling and provides advantages to applications sensitive to thermal expansion.

Microstepping Driver Options (20~40VDC or 24VDC):
- For bipolar performance, up to 40 VDC, the RBD215A-K is recommended
- For unipolar performance CMD2109P or CMD2112P is recommended.

I’m trying to decide between a 5-phase step motor system and a 2-phase step motor system. Can you tell me the differences?
A: In a motor application where noise or vibration is a concern, a 5-phase step motor system would be ideal especially at low speeds.
The following graphs show the vibration difference between a 5-phase stepping motor and a 2-phase stepping motor. The Y-axis is the vibration level and the X-axis is the motor speed.
Figure1:

Structurally, a 5-phase motor is not that different from a 2-phase motor. The rotor in both motors has 50 teeth. The difference is that since the 5-phase motor stator has 10 poles (2 per phase), the rotor only has to move 1/10 of a tooth pitch to line up with the next phase. In a 2-phase motor, the rotor has to move 1/4 of a tooth pitch to line up with the next phase (8 poles, 4 per phase). See Figure 2
Figure2:

This results in the 2-phase motor having 200 steps per rotation, 1.8° per step, while the 5-phase motor has 500 steps per rotation, 0.72° per step. The mechanically finer resolution of the 5-phase motor is inherent to its design. Because of the smaller step angles in 5-phase motors, a 5-phase motor system will exhibit much less vibration than a 2-phase motor system. Less vibration also means lower noise. Our unique 5-phase drivers are designed so that we can sense and very accurately control the amount of current sent to the phases of the motor. Since current is proportional to torque, the variations of torque between phases are minimized, and so is vibration.
Another reason is the ‘New Pentagon” winding we have introduced with our 5-phase step motors. This allows us to have even better control over torque variations since all 5 phases would be from the same winding. The ‘New Pentagon’ 5-phase design also allows for more useable torque due to reduced torque ripple, and offers more stable operation due to its 4-phase excitation sequence. See Figure 3 to see the winding for the ‘New Pentagon’ design.

Key benefits:Lower Heat Generation: The AR Series utilizes high-efficiency technology to achieve a significant reduction in the amount of heat generated from the motor. The motor generates significantly less heat than the conventional model as seen in the thermography results below. The graph below shows the difference in temperature of the motor case over the same period of time under the same operating conditions. |
Continuous Operation: The AR Series can be operated at high duty cycles. You can drive the motor continuously. Note: If the motor is operated continuously, a heat sink of a capacity at least equivalent to an aluminum plate with a size of 250 x 250mm*, 6mm thick is required. *For AC input, 100 x 100mm for DC input type.![]() |
Low Vibration: In addition to the microstep drive system, the AR Series also uses the smooth drive function to allow for smoother motion. The smooth drive function automatically implements microstep drive based on the same travel amount and speed used in the full-step mode, without changing the pulse input settings.![]() |
Improved Angle Accuracy: The AR Series uses improved current control technology to improve the stop position accuracy of the motor. The result is greater position accuracy. AR66AC-3: ±3 arc minutes, Conventional Model: ±5 arc minutes.![]() |
Up to 40% Less Power Consumption: Power consumption: up to 40% less than our conventional models. CO2 emission: up to 40% less than our conventional model (assuming operation at a duty of 40%).![]() |
The new DS Series On Board Type Driver allows for easy adoption of the 5-phase motor advantage for applications that are struggling to meet the desired results or those desiring to improve their current machine by offering:
Board mountable driver and capacitor are the only requirement. The DS Series is designed for applications where the driver must be on the printed circuit board or applications where space saving is critical. The DS series also finds its advantage with portable solutions were applied voltage is in the range of 12~24VDC (5 VDC needed for logic). |
